What Scout Does

A whole new way to explore nature

A magnifying glass-style camera with a circular display. Your child's scout companion guides them through every discovery.

🔍

See & Hear

Photograph any wildlife through Scout's lens. Hear a bird singing? Scout identifies it by sound using BirdNET — no photo needed.

🧬

Discover

AI trained on millions of wildlife observations identifies every species — birds, butterflies, plants, fungi, mammals, and more.

Collect

Build a life list of every species discovered. Earn stars, unlock badges, rise from Seedling Scout to Legend of the Wild.

How It Works

From field to discovery in four steps

Painted Lady

"Painted Ladies migrate thousands of miles every spring — some travel from North Africa all the way to the Arctic Circle."

The moment they discover what they found

Every photo becomes a discovery. The species name appears. Fun facts are read by their chosen guide character. Rarity ratings make common finds exciting and rare ones unforgettable.

This is the bit they'll talk about at dinner.

"Well I never — a Painted Lady! These travellers fly thousands of miles to get here. What a find." — Bramble the Hedgehog, Scout Guide

Built for Parents

Peace of mind, built in

Scout was designed by parents. Privacy and safety aren't features — they're the foundation.

🔍

Designed for nature, not apps

Scout's circular display shows your child's guide companion — not social media, not games, not the internet. It's a tool for discovery, not distraction.

🔒

No internet in the field

Scout only connects to your home WiFi. No cellular, no Bluetooth beacons, no cloud connection outdoors. Photos stay on the device until they're home.

👤

Face photos stay private

If your child photographs a person, that photo never leaves the device. Only nature photos are sent for identification.

Common questions

What ages is Scout designed for?
Scout is designed for children aged 5 to 13. The language and complexity of species facts automatically adjusts based on age — a 6-year-old gets simple, fun facts while a 13-year-old gets full scientific detail.
What devices does the app work on?
The Scout companion app works on iPad, Android tablets, and any desktop computer (Windows, Mac, Chromebook) via the web app. Your child installs it once and uses it like a regular app.
Does my child need their own account?
No. You set everything up as a parent and generate a simple 6-digit code. Your child enters that code on their device — no email, no password, no personal information required from them.
How does the AI identification work?
Scout uses two AI systems. For photos, BioCLIP compares your child's images against millions of real wildlife observations from around the world, narrowed to species in your region. For birdsong, BirdNET analyses audio recordings to identify bird species by sound alone. When Scout is confident, it gives a species name. When it's not sure, it gives a broader identification like "a type of blue butterfly" — honest rather than guessing.
What about my child's privacy?
Privacy is foundational, not an afterthought. Face photos are detected on-device and never uploaded anywhere. GPS is approximate only (±111m) — enough for a session map, not enough to identify a house. No analytics track your child. No ads, ever. Your child's data stays on their device.
Is there a subscription?
No. Scout has no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no premium tiers, and no paid features. You buy the camera, and everything — AI identification, all guide characters, all badges, all future updates — is included forever.
What species can Scout identify?
Scout can identify thousands of species across every major group: birds (by sight and sound), butterflies, moths, wildflowers, fungi, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and trees. It works best with common species your child is likely to encounter, and its regional database means it matches against species actually found in your area.
Does it work outside the UK?
Yes. Scout's identification system works worldwide. Regional species databases are built from observations across 34 regions covering the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Japan, and more. GPS location narrows results to species found in your area.
